Relatives of a family that was murdered in Eskişehir are angry with gendarmerie after their alleged failure to prevent a series of killings despite promises of protection, Anatolia news agency reported Wednesday.
İhsan Doğu, who had been in a conflict with his neighbors, the Toprak family, for three years, is allegedly responsible for killing four of the family’s members and two extended relatives with a pump rifle.
The suspect, who allegedly committed the murders on three separate occasions, was finally apprehended Wednesday after the sixth killing.
A court ordered Doğu’s arrest Thursday but his lawyer, Önder Can, said he intended to appeal the decision to a higher court.
The alleged murderer first raided the Toprak house in the Central Anatolian province on Aug. 23, killing four people. After the killings, Doğu went into hiding but sent word that he intended to “kill the remaining [family members] as well.”
After receiving threats of the new attack, the surviving Toprak family members, twin brothers, asked for legal protection. Gendarmerie forces began standing guard at the entrance of the house, but ceased doing so after a short period of time.
Doğu then returned on Nov. 12 to allegedly kill 35-year-old Mehmet Sadık Toprak, who had been wounded during the first attack.
The man’s twin brother, Mehmet Emin Toprak, was freed after being investigated by the gendarmerie over two rifles and a gun which were found in the house after the alleged killing.
The suspect then allegedly came back Wednesday, killing Ziya Akın, a 71-year-old relative of the Toprak family, after setting up an ambush in an empty apartment building in front of the Toprak family home the previous night.
Confessing to the murders after his apprehension, Doğu said in his testimony Thursday that there were “two more names on his [death] list.”
He said the two families had been in conflict for three years due to questions of animal grazing and, more recently, due to a “dog quarrel.” He also claimed that he and his family had been subjected to constant pressure by the Toprak family’s sons and relatives, leading him to allegedly decide last year to wipe the family out.
